Student Eligiblity

In order to take the parent-taught driver's education program, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be 14-17 years old.
  • May start online course at 14, but cannot obtain permit until 15.
  • Must have internet access with phone, table, laptop, or desktop computer.
  • Must have qualified parent or approved adult to teach you in-car portion

Parent Eligiblity

In order to be the parent instructor, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be student's parent, step-parent, grandparent, step-grandparent, legal guardian, or an individual designated by your parent/legal guardian*
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must not have had driving privileges revoked in the past 3 years.
  • Must not have more than 6 points on their driving record.
  • If you held an out-of-state license during the past three years, you will be required to provide a copy of your driving record showing your three years of licensed driving history.
  • a conviction (including a probated sentence) of criminally negligent homicide
  • a conviction (including a probated sentence) of driving while intoxicated in the last seven years

Instructors are responsible for checking their criminal and driver records prior to requesting the PTDE Program Guide. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will verify the instructor's driving history when it processes the student's learner license and again when it processes the student's provisional driver's license.

If DPS determines the instructor does not meet the requirements, DPS will deny the learner license or provisional driver's license along with any prior classroom instruction or behind-the-wheel/in-car instruction provided by the ineligible instructor.

Driver's Ed Program Overview

This course covers the state-required 32 hours of classroom online education. The parent-taught portion of the course allows the parent to be the in-car instructor for the "behind-the-wheel" instruction. We will provide an in-car driving manager that enables the parent to quickly and easily complete the required topics.

  • Once you complete the first 6 hours of your online course, you are eligible to take our online DPS exam for your driver's permit.  You have an unlimited number of times to take the exam.
  • This course was developed to be taken on any device with a modern web browser, such as your phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer.   And best of all, there is no need to download any bulky apps, clogging up your device.  Simply log in and start taking the course!
